I wrote this comic in a moment of artistic frustration; poking fun at myself and artist in general.
Looking at it now I think I should have left out the silhouette of the person talking to the cartoonist. I think it might have played better. The pacing and punch of the joke are not as strong as I had hoped either but maybe I have just lived with this joke for too many hours. I do like some of the expressions I pulled off and the overall character design. I also likes that I kept the character design consistent thru out pretty much with I usually do not do. I employed a new technique to help me do that and fortunately it do not hurt the energy I like to inject into my work.
This is going to be a busy summer and I need to find a way to produce a quality comic every week that I’m proud of but that do not suck up all my time. I have other artistic interest and commitments that I need to focus on as well.
Please let me know what you think. Have a great week.

Gosh he really need to learn to pull back on those emotions a bit. So tightly strung…
I’ve seen this movie before at comic conventions, no wait, I’ve starred in this movie before at conventions. Beautifully done. A gem for every cartoonist’s bulletin board.
Story of my life. But honestly, I somehow pictured you better looking than that Frank.
I only look at that when I first get up in the morning but by 1pm I look much better.
This is classic. Love the emotions you show and the poses. Great stuff.
Great work as always Frank! Sadly, I’ve encountered far too many of these guys in my days trolling cons looking for constructive criticism on my own work…it sucks when you meet someone you admire and they’re turds like this.
I know. I’m not sure where these type of people come from. You’d think artist would be a little humble but I guess that is pretty naive of me to think. Oh well at least I had fun with it here.
Hmmm. Going to have to watch out for this guy if I ever get to a con. (The only thing like that I’ve been to was an early Star Trek convention in Hartford in ’77 or ’78. Got to briefly meet William Shatner & Leonard Nimoy. And no, I wasn’t wearing a home-made Trek costume … maybe that’s why I stood out.)
The sillhouete worked fine for me. But I think it would have worked well without it too.
I felt like this guy a few times this past weekend! HA HA! Great comic Frank! It made me laugh. I think the silhouette worked well. It really created a nice negative space around the comic artist character, and helped control the flow of the eye.
Nice expressions and character design. I like the insights into your process that you have written about as well. It’s really a great way to keep pushing further. I look forward to more!
Thanks. I’m going to post a process one about this comic shortly.
I’m really lovin’ the lines and design here. Especially in the dude’s hair. Great work.
Thank you. Those are some really nice compliments. I really do love the contrast of black and white plus design AND cartoons so that all makes sense. Thanks again.
I can never think of just the right words to gush on people about their work. It always ends up being something vague, like “Awesome!” But I think it’s your use of blacks, your smooth clean lines, your contrast of curves and angles, your character design – they’re all “Awesome!” Plus, you’ve captured my bitterness and self loathing to a tee.
Thank you for the very nice compliments. I love all those things and have fun making my stuff look that way.
I enjoyed reading this one! I like the progression in the dude, and how it returns to where it starts. Sucha roller coaster of emotions
…I never realized you’ve met me.
Nice one!
More Bitter Cartoonist! This is a classic! Love the rough layout sketches as well.
I’m no cartoonist, but I went to film school. Big four years. Big student loan. Made many short films. Even made a couple features. Made some commercials, too. All this in less than 10 years since receiving my BFA. Some kid in high school has a better reel than mine. DRAT! I’m still paying my student loan.
This cartoon really hit home. Nice work.
I’m really into it, tnakhs for this great stuff!
